SOPA and PIPA were stopped by the internet users but the legislative threats to the open Internet cannot be stopped. This gave birth to the latest Act i.e the Cyber Intelligence Sharing And Protection Act (CISPA), which will be out in a week or two. It would give the government the ability to designate information or a
user account or an individual as a "cyber threat" for doing things like
leaking classified information or infringing on a copyright.
Once something is designated as a "cyber threat," the government, private security agencies and other companies like Google or Facebook would have free reign to share information about the threat or, in the case of a user account, share information taken from the threat. It's the same kind of broad umbrella for the Web as terms like "enemy combatant" have provided against terrorism.
This Act has a support of 28 corporate houses which include Facebook, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, Symantec, Verizon, etc.
CISPA is primarily a surveillance bill. With CISPA, a company like Google, Facebook, Twitter, or AT&T could intercept your e-mails and text messages, send copies to one another and to the government, and keep it from being sent if it fits into a plan to stop "cybersecurity" threats.
